BMW boosts towing capacity for its full-size SUVs

Towing capacity is about to get upped for the X5, X6 and X7 models.

BMW Australia has adopted the towing hardware used on US models to raise the towing capacity of its full-size SUVs by 30 percent.

Now available as a $2500 ex-factory option on the X5 (except 25d and 45e models), X6 and X7, the new set-up boosts towing capacity for a braked trailer from 2700kg to a more segment competitive 3500kg. Fitting of a local standard tongue, tow ball and electrical connector is an additional $700.

With towing such a common focus for owners in the large luxury SUV market, BMW Australia’s head of product and planning, Brendan Michel said availability of the new towbar was a welcome change, adding the higher 3.5-tonne rating is “pretty impressive”.
