BMW M2 CS 2020 detailed: Lighter weight, more power for new M2 flagship

BMW Australia has confirmed it will introduce the M2 CS to local showrooms around the middle of next year, though pricing is yet to be confirmed.

Exact Australian allocation is also yet to be revealed, but the new M2 CS flagship will be limited in number globally.

Expect to see the price sit above the $104,900 before on-road costs M2 Competition, which is powered by a 302kW/550Nm 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine.

Under the bonnet of the M2 CS however, the BMW’s M division have wrung an additional 29kW from the powerplant for a 331kW punch, while torque remains static.

Once again driving the rear wheels, the M2 CS is available with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission or a six-speed manual gearbox – a first for a CS line-up that was preceded by the M4 and M3 CS.

The increased power and reduced weight results in a zero to 100km/h run in just 4.0 seconds (4.2s with the manual), which cuts 0.3s off the landmark time of the M2 Competition.

The M2 CS wears blue paint and matte-gold 19-inch wheels.

A precise weight figure was also not given, though the M2 CS swaps out the bonnet and roof for components made in carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP).

The front splitter, spoiler and rear diffuser are also finished in exposed carbon, which contrast with the blue paintwork and matte-gold 19-inch wheels. The latter can also be optioned in a high-gloss black finish.

For reference, the current M2 Competition tips the scales at 1550kg.

Other upgrades in the M2 CS include adaptive M suspension with Comfort, Sport and Sport+ modes, sticky Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres and larger brake discs.

As an option, carbon ceramic stoppers can be requested, while more comfort-orientated tyres can also be selected when ordering.

Inside, the centre console and door trims are made from CFRP, while occupants are ensconced in bucket seats finished in leather and Alcantara.
