Coming soon: 2024 Chery Omoda 5 electric car details firm up ahead of Toyota bZ4X rival's Australian launch

A new fully electric version of the Chery Omoda 5 is on the way, with new details being confirmed for the model in Europe where its branding is simply ‘Omoda’, ditching the Chery nameplate used here.

The Omoda 5 BEV is set to go on sale in the UK next year as the brand’s debut model in a single specification - the petrol version of the car already available is yet to launch in the UK.

With a 61kWh battery and a claimed driving range of about 450km, the Omoda 5 BEV is said to feature a similarly long list of mod-cons and features as the well-equipped petrol versions here.

Also set to be front-drive with a single motor - about 150kW - it seems well-placed to be a more affordable option for those who might consider a (more expensive) Hyundai Kona EV or Toyota bZ4X.

Reports from the UK put the petrol Omoda 5 at £24,000 there, which directly converts to AU$46,105 - our Omoda 5 starts from $29,900 before on-road costs.

This means the electric Omoda could be quite an expensive offering in the UK, leaving its potential pricing here up in the air. A BYD Atto 3 with similar specifications can be had for $48,011 here, while a Hyundai Kona EV starts from $54,500.

While we don’t know if this will be the only version of the Omoda 5 EV produced, we do know it will come to Australia in at least some form, with the brand’s local arm having listed it in its planned line-up when asked.

“Four models - the Omoda 5 EX+, Omoda5 EX+ AWD, Tiggo 7 Pro and Tiggo 8 Pro - will join the Omoda 5 before the end of 2023, while Chery’s electrification journey will continue in 2024 with the innovative Omoda 5 BEV,” a spokesperson from Chery Australia has previously confirmed to CarsGuide.

The exact local timing and specification of the Omoda 5 BEV for Australia will be revealed closer to its launch next year.

Its petrol-powered sibling, the Omoda 5, launched this year and has already sold 3647 units, which means it's catching up to the likes of the Toyota C-HR (4575 units) and the Nissan Qashqai (5076).
