Finally, a bargain EV buy? 2024 Tesla Model 3 and Y electric car prices come crashing down

The price for Tesla’s popular Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV electric cars are as low as they have ever been thanks to revisions in cost that came into effect in the new financial year.

Now kicking off from $57,400 before on-road costs, the base rear-drive Model 3 is $3900 more affordable than before, while the mid-tier Long Range is now $70,400 (-$3900) and the top-spec Performance is priced at $83,400 (-$5155).

As a reminder, the base Model 3 features a driving range of up to 491 kilometres, while the Long Range and Performance reach 602kms and 547kms respectively.

The base Model 3 is also powered by a single electric motor, while the other grades score dual motors for all-wheel-drive traction.

As a result, the entry-level Model 3 needs 6.1 seconds for its zero to 100km/h acceleration run, while the more potent Long Range and Performance cut that time to just 4.4s and 3.3s – the latter with a one-foot rollout.

Tesla Australia’s website indicates that the estimated delivery window for all Model 3s are between now and August.

Meanwhile, the Model Y has also dropped $3900 in price, now starting at $65,400 for the base, rear-wheel-drive grade.

The Long Range and Performance small SUVs have also dropped $3900 and $7455 respectively to $78,400 and $91,400.

The heavier Model Y however, features less driving range than the equivalent Model 3, with 455km, 533km and 513km on tap for its three variants, respectively.

Likewise, 0-100km/h times are also longer at 6.9s, 5.0s and 3.7s respectively for the base, Long Range and Performance models.

The delivery window of the Model Y varies slightly from grade to grade, with the base car arriving before the end of August, Long Range needing an additional month and Performance available pretty much now.

The price changes of both Tesla models also come into effect with changes to the luxury car tax (LCT) threshold, with the limit raised to $89,332 for electric vehicles (EVs).

This means all Model 3 and Model Y grades (barring the top-spec Model Y Performance), fall under the threshold and buyers will not be slugged the extra tariff.
