Jaguar planning EV-only future: reports

Iconic British brand Jaguar could be transformed into an EV-only brand within the next decade, according to international reports.

UK media outlet Autocar is today reporting company bosses are mulling a move to an all-electric line-up, phasing out the brand's conventional models within the next seven years.

The plan would be spearheaded by a new and all-electric replacement for the brand's XJ sedan, which could arrive within the next two years, with Jaguar bosses targeting luxury flagships like the Mercedes S-Class or Audi A8 with an EV alternative.

Jaguar is reportedly mulling a possible five-strong EV line-up, with internal modelling forecasting some 300,000 units sold per year. The XJ replacement could be joined by a new I-Pace, as well as a new Audi E-tron-rivalling crossover that would replace the XE and XF. The F-Type has long been reported to be on the cusp of an all-electric makeover, too.

The publication reports that the strategy is currently under consideration, but is yet to be fully approved.

The bold move would put Jaguar in the box seat to take advantage of ever-stricter global emissions requirements, and if executed, would put the brand ahead of a series of global bans on the sale of new cars powered by petrol and diesel engines.

Israel, for example, has just announced a plan to ban the sale of conventional engines by 2030. The UK is working toward a 2040 deadline for the sale of all new petrol and diesel vehicles, the same timeline as France, with Norway, the Netherlands, India and others either setting similar targets or announcing similar bans.
