Mazda 3 2019: first look ahead of November debut

The new Mazda 3 has been teased ahead of its offical unveiling, with the Japanese brand releasing a brief clip to herald what it's calling a "new era" for its most popular model.

Mazda says the new car will be revealed in November, and while they're yet to confirm exactly where, you can bet the three-car garage on the covers being whipped off at the LA motor show's preview days, which begin at the end of that month.

Forget the bigger 6, in real terms, the 3 is Mazda's true flagship, easily outselling everything else in its line-up in Australia - almost 25,000 units have been sold here so far this year. As such, expect the fourth-generation model to debut new engine and technology yet to be seen elsewhere in the range.

We know already that the new 3 will feature Mazda's much-hyped (and very clever) SkyActiv-X compression-ignition petrol engine, which uses diesel-aping compression and a supercharger to reduce fuel use by as much as 30 per cent, while boosting torque by between 10 and 30 per cent.

Other details are so far under wraps, but for a hint on styling, look no further than Mazda's Kai concept car revealed in 2017.
