Chinese technology company turned electric carmaker Xiaomi has released details of the brand’s next-generation EV platform for its SU7 electric sedan.
The platform was announced in China via a video presentation featuring Xiaomi's Founder and CEO, Lei Jun. The billionaire detailed the brand's new quad-motor setup, seven-strut suspension and 48V steering and braking capabilities.
According to CarNewsChina, the new intelligent chassis tech has been in development for three years, and its highly technical underpinnings will reportedly incorporate "advanced control algorithms” using the latest computer hardware from German manufacturer Bosch.
The new "Quad-HyperEngine" system will feature two all-new electric motors, which are paired to two pre-existing V8S electric motors (not to be confused with a traditional V8). The setup reportedly achieves a maximum output of 1510kW.
All-new "Full Active Suspension", which apparently boasts seven struts, will reportedly deliver a lifting force of up to 44,000Newtons, which is equivalent to two SU7 sedans, which weigh 2200kg each.
Each wheel is also equipped with a 4.6kW power source to enable real-time damping adjustments to reduce body roll while turning, braking and accelerating.
Both the braking and steering systems incorporate a 48V power structure to support line-control braking and steering, similar to what is used on a Tesla Cybertruck.
That means the car eschews traditional hydraulic and mechanical linkages, replacing it for software-driven controls instead.
It allegedly allows for better steering ratios between the steering wheel and the wheels as well as stronger braking force.
Xiaomi’s announcement of a new vehicle platform comes as production of its flagship SU7 sedan hits 100,000 units in China in just 230 days, with the brand on track to produce 120,000 vehicles by the year's end.
It also comes just weeks after Xiaomi unveiled its new SU7 Ultra sedan at a launch event in China, a competitor to the Tesla Model S Plaid and Porsche Taycan, which CEO Lei Jun called the “fastest four-door production sedan in the world”.
Just weeks prior to its launch, an SU7 Ultra Prototype set a record lap time for a four-door sedan at the Nurburgring in Germany.
As of yet there are no confirmed plans to release the Xiaomi SU7 to the Australian market, but given the pace of its growth, it's quite possible we could see it arrive on our shores in the near future.
