New cut-price Tesla Model Y rival takes shape in fresh render: 2025 Mona G03 firms as an affordable alternative to the XPeng G6, Deepal S07 and BYD Sealion 7

A revolutionary range of affordable electric cars could be headed our way.

XPeng, which recently launched in Australia with its Tesla Model Y-rivalling G6, is tipped to bring its range of Mona vehicles Down Under.

The boss of XPeng’s local importer TrueEV, Jason Clarke, said late last year the Mona sedan is one of the several XPeng models slated for our market.

“The Mona is the (Made on new AI), that’s the first model with the Volkswagen joint venture, and that’s the one that sold 10,000 units in 50 minutes in China and that’s sub-US$20,000. That’s gonna change a lot,” said Clarke.

The sedan isn’t the only model being prepared by the brand in China. 

Reports from its home market suggest a new mid-size SUV called the Mona G03 will be revealed this year, which is based on the current M03. 

Recent renders published by CarNewsChina give us a hint at what the coming cut-price electric car might look like.

It brings much of the same styling as the M03, but with increased ride height and a more bulbous shape befitting its SUV status.

The M03 it is based on uses a circa-62kWh lithium-iron phosphate battery (LFP) sourced from BYD. It reportedly provides a driving range of about 500km.

There are two electric motor options, one pumping out 140kW and the other 160kW.

Inside there is expected to be a Tesla-like design with a two-spoke steering wheel, next-to-zero physical buttons and a single central screen that will be used for most of the car’s basic functions.

In China Mona models have plenty of safety tech including advanced autonomous driving and lots of active drive aids. 

Chinese brands in Australia often have these features but the can be poorly calibrated and are overbearing by local standards.

XPeng, and its Mona sub-brand, are just a number of new electric car brands from China looking to upset the apple cart.

Its G6 mid-size SUV undercuts the Tesla Model Y and brings plenty of goodies such as 20-inch alloy wheels, a circa-15-inch central touchscreen and a 10.2-inch digital driver display, synthetic leather trim and power adjustable, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, two wireless device chargers and a booming 960-watt stereo.

The G6 starts at a very appetising $54,800 (before on-roads) for the Standard Range variant and $59,800 for the Long Range version.

Base versions use a 66kWh battery and the long-legged examples have a 87.5kWh battery that delivers a driving range of 435km and 570km, respectively.
