New Fiat 500 2021 detailed: All-electric 500e to spearhead new-generation light car

Fiat has unveiled its next-generation 500 light car, headlined by a new all-electric 500e that could come to Australia.

Few details are available for the new Fiat 500, but the emissions-free version is fitted with a 42kWh lithium-ion battery that will enable up to 320km of driving range when tested on the WLTP standard.

An 85kW fast charging system is also available, which can top up 50km of range in five minutes and 80 per cent in 35 minutes with the right socket, according to the Italian brand.

The electric motor outputs 87kW to the front wheels, which enables a zero to 100km/h spring in 9.0 seconds, but a 0-50km/h run in just 3.1s thanks to maximum torque being available off the line.

Three driving modes are offered in the new 500 – Normal, Range and Sherpa – which will adjust the electric drive system accordingly.

In addition to the all-electric drivetrain, the new Fiat 500 will also be fitted with Level 2 autonomous capabilities – or advanced driver-assistance systems – such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition, blind-spot monitoring, surround-view monitor and driver attention alert.

The current Fiat 500 misses out on advanced safety technology as it was launched in 2007. Despite this, the light car still retains a full five-star ANCAP crash safety rating.

Now 600mm wider, 60mm longer and with a 20mm extended wheelbase, Fiat says there is now more space for occupants;

Inside, the new Fiat 500 sports a Uconnect 5 multimedia touchscreen system that measures 10.25 inches, and touts wireless Apple CarPlay connectivity and Android Auto via a cable.

The new system also allows owners to remotely monitor vehicle settings and charge times via their smartphone, send navigation destinations and connect to Wi-Fi networks.

Fiat’s new 500 city car is also expected to be made available with petrol engines, possible a carryover 51kW/102Nm 1.2-litre unit, but more details are expected to be revealed soon.
