Porsche Cayman GT4 and Spyder 2020 revealed

Porsche has unveiled a new set of hardcore track-focused halo variants to top out its 718 range consisting of the Cayman GT4 coupe and Spyder drop-top.

Both cars now sport the same newly-developed and mid-mounted 309kW/420Nm four-litre non-turbo flat-six engine which is mated exclusively to a six-speed manual gearbox.

This combination allows both the Cayman GT4 and Spyder to accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 4.4 seconds, with a max speed of 301km/h.

Available to be ordered now, with deliveries starting in “Q1 2020” the Cayman GT4 and Spyder are priced at $218,800 and $209,000 respectively.

The ‘Spyder’ name stands in for the ‘Boxster’ for the halo variant, in reference to earlier Porsche models like the 550 Spyder.

The price is a significant premium over the current top-spec Cayman and Boxster GTS at $177,690 and $180,490 each.

The Cayman GT4 is claimed to produce more than 50 per cent more downforce courtesy of re-worked aerodynamics “without adversely affecting drag” thanks to items like a re-designed rear diffuser, fixed rear wing, spoiler lip and air curtains.

Unique to the Spyder is an automatically-lifting rear wing which raises at 120km/h, and specially-designed “ultra-high performance” tyres.

Both cars benefit from Porsche Active Suspension Management, Porsche Stability Management (which can be disabled), and Porsche Torque Vectoring to further enhance handling for the track. 

Both performance heroes benefit from aero improvements and active performance features.

Porsche says these enhancements help the Cayman shave more than 10 seconds off of its Nurburgring lap-time.

The options list is also populated by the further-enhancing Clubsport package (rear steel roll bar and six-point harness belt) and the 'Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake' package.

Standard spec on Australian-delivered Cayman GT4s and Spyders includes bi-xenon headlights, reversing camera, auto-dimming rear mirrors, ambient interior lighting, Apple CarPlay, built-in sat-nav, dual-zone climate control and heated seats.

Although performance focused, luxury touches and standard spec haven't been forgotten.

The Spyder gains a heated steering wheel as part of its standard equipment over the Cayman.
