There’s good news for Australian fans of the Ram 1500.
The model sold here by American Special Vehicles is actually based on the fourth-generation (codenamed DS) of the iconic pick-up truck; not the fifth-generation (codenamed DT) Ram launched in 2018. But that doesn’t mean the local 1500 is in for a short-life, with Ram not only likely continue building the older model but also updated it.
In the US market the DS model is sold as the 1500 Classic, as a more affordable offering compared to the newer, more advanced model launch last year. Speaking to investors last week Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Mike Manley reportedly confirmed the 1500 Classic would continue to be built alongside the latest generation.

That’s good news for American Special Vehicles as it means the local operation will be able to continue offering its existing 1500 as its popularity shows no signs of fading. But American Special Vehicles has already confirmed it will add the DT 1500 to its range as soon as it becomes available outside the US market, which is expected to be sometime in 2020.
