Should Porsche be worried? 2024 MG Cyberster electric sports car revealed as 400kW EV drop-top set for Australia!

The Cyberster ditches some of its wilder concept car elements, but keeps the scissor doors!

After months of leaks, speculation and sneaky photos, the first official images of the MG Cyberster have finally been released after its debut at the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show.

The electric car’s official reveal comes less than a week after information published by the Chinese government’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) revealed specifications for the convertible before the brand had officially confirmed them.

As reported last week, the Cyberster seems more likely to be a rival to entry-level Porsches like the Cayman, or sports cars like those from Lotus or Alpine.

According to the information published by the Chinese MIIT, it will come in two drivetrain variants, a single rear-motor version with an output of 231kW, and an all-wheel-drive variant with a 150kW front motor and a 250kW rear motor.

The Cyberster in its single-motor variant will weigh about 1850kg, with the dual-motor at 1985kg. It's 4535mm long, 1913mm wide, and 1329mm tall - slightly larger than a Porsche Cayman - with a 2690mm wheelbase.

While the weight from its battery packs is significant, Autocar reports that the Cyberster's expected range could be as much as 800km, thanks to a cell-to-pack battery design that increases energy density and takes up less space.

While more specific details are slim, Australians do have a reason to be interested - an MG Motor Australia spokesperson told CarsGuide the Cyberster will indeed make it to our shores.

The Cyberster will be a Porsche Cayman rival. The Cyberster will be a Porsche Cayman rival.

“I can confirm that we will be bringing the MG Cyberster to the Australian and New Zealand market and hope to have more exciting news to share around this in due course.”

CarsGuide asked MG Australia for further details regarding specification, but so far the announcement that it will launch here is all the brand can confirm.
