Should this car worry Tesla? New electric SUV arrives in Australia in the form of the Deepal S07 to take on the fast selling Tesla Model Y and coming BYD Sealion 7

Deepal is the latest car brand to launch in Australia and its S07 electric SUV is due to land on our roads in November.

The mid-size S07 is aimed at the Tesla Model Y and other Chinese rivals, such as the Xpeng G6 and coming Skywell EVA 5.

Deepal will be distributed by Inchcape, which is the importer for other brands such as Subaru and Peugeot.

The S07 will be available in just one guise. It has a circa-80kWh battery that feeds a single rear mounted electric motor making 160kW and 320Nm.

Deepal claims it can drive up to 475km via the benchmark WLTP test cycle.

The high capacity nickel-manganese-cobalt battery can only accept a max charge rate of 92kW, which is well below its main rivals.

The company said it would take 35 minutes to go from 30 to 80 per cent when connected to a DC charger.

It can accept up to 11kW via an AC wallbox charger that’ll top up the battery form flat to full over night.

It’s the same size as standard mid-size SUVs such as the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V but it has a massive distance between the front and rear wheels that makes it much more spacious inside than petrol.

The boot is a decent size at 445 litres, though still well below petrol powered alternative. It does have the benefit of a deep 125L storage compartment under the bonnet.

The S07 has the same generic sleek electric SUV body shape that promotes aerodynamic efficiency over edgy boxy design.

The front end adds a bit of pop with some deep cut outs drawing the eyes away from the bluff front end.

Inside the S07 has an impressive level of standard equipment.

Faux leather seats are heated and electronically adjustable, there are plenty of plush materials used throughout the cabin and some sleek wood-like veneer used on the door trim.

It follows the design direction of having no screen or instruments in front of the driver, which means your travelling speed and battery life is most likely displayed in the centre screen.

Push button door handles inside are different but create a tidier door layout.

A giant 15.6-inch multimedia touchscreen automatically pivots towards the driver or passenger depending on who is using it.

The cabin also has multiple modes such as a “Smoking Mode” that cracks the windows. There is also a camera located near the rear vision mirror through which you can view the whole cabin from the centre screen. A nap mode can be used when charging, which reclines the driver’s seat automatically and sets a timer to wake you up.

It has a 14-speaker stereo, panoramic sunroof with an electrically controlled sunshade and 64 colour ambient lighting, too.

There is wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a mass of USB charging ports.This is complemented by a wireless device charger that is ventilated to help your phone from overheating.

Deepal is backing the S07 with a seven year/160,000km warranty.

The company will release prices in a few weeks but expect it to be priced similar to the $54,800 before on-road costs Xpeng G6 and $55,900 before on-road costs entry-level Tesla Model Y.
