Smashed it: 2022 Genesis GV70, BMW iX and Volkswagen Caddy Maxi score maximum safety rating

The Genesis GV70 mid-size SUV is one of three new models to get five stars in ANCAP’s latest round of safety ratings.

Three new models that recently reached the Australian market have been given the maximum safety rating.

Local independent vehicle safety authority, ANCAP, has awarded the Genesis GV70 mid-size SUV, BMW iX large SUV and Volkswagen Caddy Maxi people mover five stars.

The petrol or diesel GV70 ($66,400 to $83,276 plus on-road costs) scored 89 per cent in both Adult Occupant Protection and Child Occupant Protection, 64 per cent in Vulnerable Road User Protection and 87 per cent in Safety Assist.

ANCAP chief executive officer Carla Hoorweg said: “The Genesis GV70 offers a comprehensive range of safety features and solid results across all areas of ANCAP’s assessment.”

Meanwhile, the all-electric iX ($135,900 to $169,900 plus on-road costs) registered 91 per cent in Adult Occupant Protection, 88 per cent Child Occupant Protection, 73 per cent in Vulnerable Road User Protection and 78 per cent in Safety Assist.

“BMW have again placed safety as a high priority in their vehicle design and specifications, and the iX results show BMW aren’t willing to compromise on safety for an alternative-powered vehicle,” Ms Hoorweg said.

The petrol or diesel Caddy Maxi ($46,140 to $57,690 plus on-road costs) totalled 84 per cent in Adult Occupant Protection, 86 per cent in Child Occupant Protection, 69 per cent in Vulnerable Road User Protection and 79 per cent in Safety Assist.

Ms Hoorweg said: “Volkswagen has made notable safety improvements in the new-generation Caddy people mover, compared to the previous model, and should be congratulated for achieving this five-star ANCAP safety rating.”

Released in June, the GV70’s maximum safety rating only applies to its three four-cylinder variants, with the sole V6 version excluded. Conversely, the iX and Caddy Maxi’s apply range-wide.
