Steve McQueen's personal Harley up for bids
No, it’s not the one from the famous jump scene at the end of The Great Escape, but the late Hollywood great Steve McQueen almost certainly had more seat time on this Harley than those used in the movie.
The two Harleys used for The Great Escape jump scene were both German-disguised 1937 Harleys, and the jump itself was not performed by McQueen but by his stunt double, Bud Ekins.
McQueen’s love of cars and motorcycles is legendary, and this 1938 Harley Davidson WLD Solo Sport from his personal collection fits right in with his ultra-cool image.
The McQueen Harley will go under the hammer at Mecum’s Anaheim auction later this month, and wears its original paint from new, despite racking up 21,000 miles (33,600km) over its 75 years.
The classic Hog also comes with full McQueen ownership documentation and a collection of tools found wrapped in denim in the bike’s frame-mounted tool box.
Such pedigree is likely to command a pretty penny at auction, with other McQueen relics such as his race suit from the Le Mans film recently fetching US$984,000 ($1.05m), and the Porsche 911 he drove in the same film commanding US$1.375 million ($1.47m).
Just how valuable the conglomerate of cool that is a McQueen Harley Davidson will be revealed when Mecum drops the hammer on November 23.
