The new HiLux versus Ranger? Chevrolet Silverado and Ram 1500 battle heats up as giants battle for the title of Australia's best-selling jumbo ute

The battle for the title of Australia's favourite jumbo truck is heating up, with just two sales separating the Chevrolet Silverado and the Ram 1500 in May.

The Toyota Tundra is yet to officially go on sale – though the brand has delivered close to 180 examples as part of its pre-launch validation program – while the Ford F-150 has been hit by several issues hampering its sales.

That leaves just the Ram 1500 and the Chevrolet Silverado to duke it out for jumbo ute supremacy, and their battle is one of the closest in the industry.

In fact, the Ram1500 outsold the same-sized Chevrolet Silverado by just two units in May, with Ram selling 207 examples of the 1500, compared to 205 sales for the Silverado.

Taking a brand-wide view, Chevrolet took the crown, with a total 332 sales across the Silverado and Silverado HD, while Ram managed a total 273 sales across the 1500, 2500 and 3500.

Conversely, the Ford F-150 delivered just 39 vehicles in May, compared to the Tundra's 29 - again, part of the latter's pre-launch campaign.

Year-to-date figures paint an increasingly close picture between Ram and Chevrolet, with the latter securing 1519 sales so far in 2024, and Ram holding the lead with 1637 units delivered.

No matter which brand you choose, entry to the jumbo-ute space sits in rarified air. The Chevrolet Silverado opens with the 1500 LTZ Premium and now costs $130,500 before on-road costs after $2500 price increase earlier this year, attributed to the addition of the brand's active performance exhaust.

It's powered by a monstrous 6.2-litre petrol V8 generating 313kW of power and 624Nm of torque.

The Ram 1500 family opens with the 1500 Big Horn short wheelbase, yours for $119,950 before on-road costs. It's powered by a 5.7-litre petrol V8, good for 291kW and 556Nm.
