Suzuki will launch a five-door version of its Jimny off-roader as early as 2021 or 2022, with the Japanese brand working with Toyota on the new family-sized 4WD, according to new reports.

That's the word out of Suzuki in India, where the three-door version is about to launch. But according to local media, that's just the beginning.

Next, the brand will partner with Toyota, borrowing that brand's Raize platform - a micro-SUV developed in part by Daihatsu - to finally deliver the long-awaited larger version of the Jimny.

The new vehicle is expected to be powered by the same 1.5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine - borrowed form the Suzuki Ertiga - as the three-door Jimny, which develops around 75kW and 130Nm. It will be equipped with the same 4WD systems as the three-door, too.

There is no word yet from Suzuki in Australia on the five-door Jimny, but given the immense popularity of the three-door model - which currently has a months-long waiting list - the brand would have to be interested in expanding the line-up here.
