Toyota HiLux is Australia's best-selling vehicle... again

For the second-straight year the Toyota HiLux ute has been named Australia's best-selling vehicle.

After claiming the crown in 2016, the HiLux has retained the throne at the top of the 2017 sales charts, with a huge 47,093 examples of the ute sold – that number accounts for 4x2 and 4x4 sales across all body types (single-, extra- and dual-cab).

In fact, sales of the HiLux 4x4 were up by 13.6 per cent compared with 2016, and HiLux 4x2 sales jumped 7.0 per cent over the same period.

The next best-selling ute was the Ford Ranger with 42,728 sales, followed by the Mitsubishi Triton (23,605) and Holden Colorado (21,579).

On the back of the HiLux's 20th consecutive year as the best-selling commercial vehicle in the country, Toyota Australia president Matt Callachor said there's no sign of demand for utes abating anytime soon – and SUV sales are helping.

"SUV sales have grown 14 per cent during this period while sales of LCVs have grown almost 18.9 per cent. The surge in demand for vehicles like the HiLux can be viewed as an extension of the popularity of SUVs.

"They're high-riding vehicles that can take you on your adventures while delivering car-like features and comfort," he said.

Toyota Australia also celebrated another year at the top of the manufacturer sales charts, easily accounting for the number one spot with a huge tally of 216,566 sales – which is 18.2 per cent of all new vehicles sold in the country in 2017, and up 3.3 per cent compared to last year.

As of 2017's results, Toyota has retained the title of best-selling brand for 15 years straight. It's also the 13th time the company has sold more than 200,000 vehicles in a calendar year.

The next best-selling brand was Mazda with 116,349 sales (9.8 per cent of market share), while Hyundai rounded out the top three, with 97,013 sales (8.2 per cent market share).
