The iX isn’t a fully operational patrol car - at least not yet.
There’s a new sheriff in New South Wales… sort of. The NSW Police Force’s Highway Patrol division has a new toy, in the form of a BMW iX electric car.
Images posted to a Facebook group called Electric Cars Australia show the BMW iX in a warehouse, fully dressed in NSW Highway Patrol livery, with the HWP150 code seen on previous ‘special’ patrol cars like the FPV Falcon GT R-Spec’s number plate, suggesting it could be mainly used as a public relations vehicle.
A spokesperson for the NSW Police Force confirmed to CarsGuide that “community engagement and testing purposes” are two of its current roles.

“Traffic and Highway Patrol Command continuously review operational needs and assets used by officers in their daily duties.
“In a partnership between Transport for NSW and the NSW Police Force, an electric vehicle is being evaluated to determine its capabilities and operational use.
“The vehicle has limited operational use at this time and will be used for community engagement and testing purposes.”
The specific variant is an xDrive40, a 240kW all-wheel drive model that starts from $135,900 before on-road costs, with a claimed 0-100km/h time of 6.1 seconds - not quite the highest performance model to ever join the NSW Highway Patrol.
The aforementioned FPV GT R-Spec was tuned by racing legend Dick Johnson’s DJR team and made 600kW.
