We turn the spotlight on the car world's newest and brightest stars as we ask the questions to which you want the answers. But there's only one question that really needs answering would you buy one?
What is it?
This is the top dog in performance terms in Peugeot's range. The RCZR is also the most powerful road going Peugeot ever. And it a stunner to look at as well as drive. They made it by tapping into Peugeot Sport's race technology and infact used many bits from Pug's race cars.
How much?
Costs $68,990, 10 grand more than the 'normal' RCZ. But the performance level and spec' more than justifies the price and then you compare it with something like the Audi TT.... RCZR becomes a value equation.
What are competitors?
Audi TT, BMW 228i Coupe, Nissan 370Z.
What's under the bonnet?
Copious power comes from a hand built 1.6-litre twin scroll turbo petrol four cylinder with direct injection, variable valve timing and lift. It's used in heaps of vehicles from Mini to BMW to Peugeot to Citroen. But this one has the top power output at 199kw and 330Nm of torque. Gets forged pistons, rods, reinforced cylinder block, clutch, gearbox, bearings, bigger intercooler, modified exhaust.
How does it go?
Whoosh. Puts a big smile on your dial when you exercise the right foot and sounds good too. Excellent six speed manual box, torsen front diff, low ride height sporty suspension setting. 98 octane.
No go fast buttons to push - it's set ready to go as soon as you fire it up. Peugeot Sport reworked nearly every part of the car... and it shows.
Is it economical?
Surprisingly so rated at 6.3-litres/100km if you can resist the temptations of the right pedal.
Is it green?
Extremely green scoring a EURO 6.1 rating about as far in advance as they can go right now.
Is it safe?
Five stars with everything that brings - plus the inherent safety of a car with this level of dynamics.
Is it comfortable?
In the front two seats yes. Forget the rear seats. The luxury kit list is generous including cruise, remote central locking, front and rear park assist, heated mirrors, RD4 audio, leather, Bluetooth audio and phone (difficult to use), satnav, dual zone climate control,, pollen filter, bi-xenons, LEDs, auto wipers and headlights.
What's it like to drive?
Fabulous car to drive. They say it does the 0-100kmh sprint in 5.9 seconds - feels a lot quicker than that. But the real treat is cornering. The RCZR pulls you through without putting a wheel out of place. Has astonishing brakes and grip. Direct steering feel and superb close ratio gearbox. A real driver's car.
Is it value for money?
Against the competition yes. As long as buyers can get over the engine capacity ''issue.''
Would we buy one?
Absolutely, in white.
