We turn the spotlight on the car world's newest and brightest stars as we ask the questions to which you want the answers. But there's only one question that really needs answering would you buy one?
What is it?
This is Skoda’s top of the range Yeti small SUV - the one with a modicum of off road capability and a tougher look. Yeti was recently upgraded with a fresh face, slight interior tweak, different wheels and some additional kit.
How much?
The Yeti Outdoor 2.0 Tdi goes for $33,590 but the drive car had the optional Tech Pack costing an extra $2900 that includes the very necessary satnav, park assist and premium audio .
What are its competitors?
There are plenty - RAV4, Hyundai iX35, Mitsubishi ASX, Nissan Dualis, Honda CRV, 2008 Pug and of course the VW Tiguan on which Yeti is based.
What's under the bonnet?
This gets the ubiquitous VW-sourced 2.0-litre turbo diesel with 103kW/350Nm output. It’s in numerous VW/Audi/Skoda products and in this case has a six-speed dual clutch DSG gearbox driving all four wheel on a demand basis. There’s a clever VW Golf R drive system and a new Haldex clutch to put drive to the wheels with more grip. Normal drive is to the front wheels.
How does it go?
Pretty good actually. There’s a bit of a rumble from the diesel donk at certain times but it delivers plenty of get-go across a wide operation range and once up and running, you can’t notice it.
Is it economical?
Yeti is a fuel sipper rated at 6.7L/100km but we did better than that on the highway - by a longshot. Fuel economy is a strong point with the Yeti diesel - you could clock 1000km without too much trouble on one tank.
Is it green?
4.5 star green car rating, scores a Euro 5 emissions rank.
Is it safe?
Five stars with all that brings.
What's it like to drive?
Yes, we like it, the rumbles are a tad disconcerting at low speed but once up to the required pace - its smooth and quiet. Minimal turbo lag means good throttle response and there’s an appealing robust feel to the Yeti that gives you confidence. Interior is comfortable and easy to use with plenty of kit.
Is it value for money?
OK value for money - $5,000 less than a similar Tiguan but add the Tech Pack and the Off Road Pack and it’s about the same. Satnav should be standard.
Would we buy one?
Maybe. We are hot and cold on the styling - particularly the boxy rear end but that means it’s practical and roomy inside. There’s plenty of luggage space and the Variofold seats are excellent.
