Audi Q3 2014 Review

We turn the spotlight on the car world's newest and brightest stars as we ask the questions to which you want the answers. But there's only one question that really needs answering would you buy one?

What is it?

This is Audi's entry level, high value Q3 compact SUV. It's thousands less than the next model up and for all intents and purposes, looks the same and goes pretty much the same as the next model's up. It's only a front wheel drive but hey, who cares. The Q3 1.4 feels the same to drive as other models in the lineup.

How much?

The dollars are good at $42,300 but a number of option packs can add between $2000-7000 on top of that. Just about every buyer will spend a bit more and customise their car.

What are competitors?

VW Tiguan, Benz GLA, BMW X1.
  
What's under the bonnet?

It gets a direct injection, 1.4-litre turbo  four cylinder that sees duty in many Audi/VW/Skoda products. The engine's good, so's the dual clutch S-Tronic manumatic driving the front wheels only. Power is 110kW with 250Nm of torque, the latter at low engine speed to make it readily accessible.

How does it go?

Really well. Feels stronger than the engine capacity would suggest. Gets out of the blocks neatly, pulls hard and spins to redline willingly. Minimal noise and no vibration to speak of. The whole thing is neatly harnessed by Audi's six speed dual clutch auto that never feels to be in the wrong gear.

Is it economical?

Gets 6.2-litres/100km. We saw better than that on the highway but it prefers 98 octane which adds to the weekly bottom line. 

Is it green?

Yes rated at 4.5 stars on the green vehicle guide. 

Is it safe?

Five stars 

Is it comfortable?

Yes, slightly sporty edge to the ride doesn't diminish comfort - actually enhances it. Easy to use controls, well weighted steering, comfy seats and minimal noise.

What's it like to drive?

Good. Plenty of get go. Happily  revs right out and pulls strongly right through the range. Torque from turbo helps the drive feel. You can be lazy and just push the accelerator with rewarding results.

Is it value for money?

In Audi terms yes but those options packs are an imposition. Everyone wants at least something in the packs.
