Hilux 'pole dancer' at show

The 3.0 turbo diesel twin cab Toyota Hilux became the first car to reach the Magnetic North Pole.

The Toyota HiLux that conquered the North Pole and, perhaps more impressively, survived the gruesome hamming of the Top Gear blokes, is en route to the Australian International Motor Show.

This is the 3.0 turbo diesel twin cab device became the first car to reach the Magnetic North Pole.

It also transported a crew of scientists and their monitoring gear to Iceland's rumbling Eyjafjallajökull volcano.

For the drive to the pole, the double-cab 3.0-litre turbo-diesel HiLux was specially adapted to cope with the extreme terrain and minus 36C temperature and the torturous showing off of Jeremy Clarkson and James May on a 360-nautical mile route began from Resolute in Nunavut province, Canada.

The HiLux survived polar bears, suspension shuddering blocks of ice and ceaseless repartee on a trip that included another HiLux and a LandCruiser Prado.

For the Iceland jaunt, the HiLux was fitted with the same extreme-environment specification, including giant low-pressure 38-inch tyres.

It arrived hours before Eyjafjallajökull performed its mass extinction imitation, blowing its top and sending clouds of ash 10km up, disrupting international air travel.
