Toyota Prado 2005: Fuel consumption

Answered by CarsGuide 19 Jan 2012

Without knowing more about the roads you were on, the speeds you were traveling at and the load you were hauling it's hard to say what you would get. But the Prado is a big lump of a thing, pushing a lot of air, and I bet it was working hard. It's probably within the ballpark in the conditions.

Toyota Prado: Transmission fluid replacement

Answered by CarsGuide 25 Aug 2011

I would have the transmission serviced, particularly as you obviously do a lot of towing as relatively heavy loads. And like you I would expect the bonnet struts could be re-gassed if they are a problem. Dealers normally go for the most efficient option for them and replacing them with new components out of their parts department is much faster and cheaper than sending the struts out for re-gassing and waiting for them to come back to be refitted. That all takes time and costs the dealer time, money and efficiency in his workshop. And don't expect the dealer to use aftermarket parts when he can make more money out of selling you some nice, shiny, new factory parts.

Toyota Prado 2005: Soft brakes

Answered by CarsGuide 26 May 2011

We have been told that some softness is a characteristic of the Prado, and despite this uncertain feeling the brakes do work and stop the car effectively. We have also been told that there is an issue with the brake master cylinder and Toyota has been replacing them under warranty. I would suggest you quiz your dealer about the master cylinder issue and request that he checks yours.

Yours is the first report of a problem we have received at Cars Guide. We have passed your report on to Toyota for their response, and in the meantime ask Prado owners to contact us if they have had the same problem.

Convert a Prado

Answered by CarsGuide 19 Feb 2010

Toyota, and every other carmaker for that matter, won't ever recommend converting its cars to LPG because the modification is done out of its control and to specs it has no knowledge or control over. It has nothing to do with whether the car is suitable to run on LPG. The Prado can be successfully converted to run on LPG. Consult a respected installer and ask for their advice, and check with other Prado owners who have used the same installer to convert their cars.

Nissan Pajero 2004: Does this model have issues with its engine?

Answered by CarsGuide 1 Jan 2010

I WOULD like to be able to confirm that the problem with the 3-litre turbodiesel engine has been fixed, but I can't. My attempts to get Nissan to own up to a fix have been a dismal failure. All it would tell me is it would take care of owners of any Patrol that had an engine problem. Read into that what you will.

Have Wheels Will Travel

Answered by CarsGuide 28 Aug 2009

I WOULD not recommend the turbodiesel Patrol because of the high number of reports of engine failure, which leaves the two Toyotas. Both will do what you want, but I would go for the Prado because it's a little more civilised than the LandCruiser.  I would also go for the diesel rather than the petrol V6 because I believe it will give you better fuel economy on your trip.
