BMW's 3-series models are all rear-wheel drive, with the exception of the X-drive all-wheel-drive model. There are no front-wheel drive BMW 320i models.

BMW's 3-series has traditionally been a rear-wheel-drive model in Australia, however the current 320Ds come in both RWD but also all-wheel-drive as the 320D xDrive model.

Take it to an independent mechanic who specializes in BMWs or European brands and have them assess the problem for you. The quote from the BMW dealer would suggest that they want to replace the gearbox, but an independent mechanic might be able to repair it at a much-reduced cost, and even if the gearbox does have to be replaced it will be cheaper.

The BMW service intervals are set by engine time and indicated on the dash when you first turn the ignition on. If you choose not to follow that changing the engine oil and filter every 10,000 km would be fine; the transmission oil is normally drained at every Level 2 inspection and service, and that generally equates to around 80,000 km.
