My 2006 Toyota Corolla 5-speed manual suffers from the same flat spot problem as Suzanne's Corolla (Carsguide, March 7, 2014). I too have been driving manual cars for over 40 years and ever since I bought this Corolla I have had the engine stall at low revs. When I keep the revs up, as you say to do, the engine seems to try to go, but all of a sudden it stalls. The main problem is this stupid electronic throttle, or drive-by-wire system, so the computer can control the engine. It is very dangerous, because recently my wife stalled the engine at a set of lights and she was nearly rammed from behind by a large truck. Is there any fix available for this problem?

28 Mar 2014You have to be familiar with your engine's torque curve to takeoff smoothly in a manual, particularly a four-cylinder. It could well be that at the revs you are using at takeoff coincides with a flat spot in the torque curve, It could be the calibration of the throttle system, but it's more likely a case of getting used to it.
