I bought a 2011 Series II Commodore Calais V (6-litre V8) and on some, but not all, starts first thing in the morning there is a "rattle'', similar to a tappet noise, for about five seconds. The car runs perfectly once warmed up. I have taken it back to a Holden dealer, but they say they couldn't hear anything. Do you have any idea what it could be?

27 Dec 2013It could well be a valve lifter that's draining while the car is standing and the engine not running. It might be a case of establishing which lifter is at fault and replacing it, but you need an experienced mechanic to listen to it to determine where it is coming from. If it only happens when the engine is started from cold it might be necessary to leave the car with the dealer overnight.
