Ask Smithy Xtra 91 Ford Maverick dual-fuel issues

Asked by Jack Roppola

My 1991 Ford Maverick 4.2-litre dual-fuel surges under light acceleration while running on petrol or gas. It is very noticeable when trying to maintain a speed of say 50-60 km/h. It also lacks power, which is most noticeable when driving up hills. The compression is fairly even, the carby has been rebuilt, the head has been re-conditioned, and the ignition system has been renewed, all without fixing the problem. What else can I do?

You’ve replaced the ignition system, so you need to look at the fuel supply. I would check the fuel pressure, the fuel pump, and make sure it’s getting enough fuel.
