Ask Smithy Xtra Mitsubishi Magna idles

Asked by Sunny.

My TF Mitsubishi Magna idles at around 1800 rpm at start-up, then it slowly drops to 1200 and then when I put it in gear it drops to around 900 rpm. But when I turn the air-conditioning on it idles at around 1100 rpm on cold start-up and 850-900 rpm when hot. Then when I turn the air-conditioning off it goes up again. I have tried changing idle stepper motor and cleaned the throttle body, but with no luck. Any ideas?

Check and if necessary reset the base idle speed. If the stepper motor has been faulty it could be that someone has attempted to get around the problem by adjusting the base idle, and now with the new stepper motor working as it should the idle is all over the place. You could also check the temperature sensor on the fuel-injection system to make sure it’s working correctly and sending out the correct signal.
