Ask Smithy Xtra S60 engine
Asked by Linda Kelly
The engine in my beloved 2001 Volvo S60 has completely blown. Is it better to put in a reconditioned motor or a secondhand one? It is a 5-cylinder turbo so I assume that a Volvo engine is the only one that can be put in?

7 Sep 2010Fitting a Volvo engine is your only realistic choice, and the decision between a reconditioned engine and a secondhand one comes down to how long you think you will keep the car. A reconditioned engine is the best choice because you are, in effect, getting a new engine. While a secondhand engine would be a cheaper option and might well give you good service you know little about its condition and how much service you could expect to get out of it. If you plan to keep the car for a long time go for the reconditioned engine, if you plan to get it going and get out of it in a short period of time go the cheaper secondhand route.
