Check Your Dealer

Asked by David Milner

I AM looking at buying a new 4x4 ute and have been leaning towards the Ford Ranger turbodiesel. I have a Ford dealer less than a minute down the road, which would be handy for servicing and any warranty issues that may arise. But having read the less than complimentary things about Ford and the way it treats its customers when they have a problem, I have begun to think I might be better off buying a Mazda BT-50. I believe they are the same vehicle under a model-sharing agreement, but a Mazda dealer told me that, though the differences are basically cosmetic, the BT-50 has a better engine. He wouldn't say how it was better. Perhaps you could tell me.

The Mazda dealer is having a lend of you. The differences are mostly cosmetic and the engines are the same. Both come from Thailand, both were designed by Mazda. As for the dealer I would normally say avoid the Ford dealer because Ford's treatment of its customers, at dealer level and at company level, is appalling, but to say that would be unfair to those Ford dealers who do try to look after customers, and there are some out there. Clearly the Ford dealer is a better option for you so I would check with people who have dealt with that dealer and make your decision based on what they tell you.
