Cracking sound when starting ignition

Asked by Bill Jackson

I have complained to the dealer and to Honda of a cracking sound when starting my 2011 Honda Civic VTI-L. It does it intermittently, but predominately on the first start up, and on occasions it lurches forward. At all times if I immediately turn the ignition off and restart the car it ignites "sweetly" with no noise, as you would expect?

The dealer and Honda have been fairly good in trying to find the fault, but the bloody thing has not done it when they have had the car. Under warranty they have replaced the starter motor twice and they have removed the transmission, checked the driveplate, and starter and ring gear condition, and found no obvious fault, but replaced all the above parts. They started the car repeatedly, and all was ok! That was done in March 2012 and I have not taken the car back since then thinking that it is my imagination and I would just live with it. But it is still doing it and it is very noticeable when I start it with the air-conditioning on. The last time I spoke to the dealer they advised me that Honda had said that before they proceed they would have to experience the fault themselves, although my mechanic of 26 years and my nieces husband who is an ex-franchisee of the NRMA have both experienced the noise. This is a tricky one, what is your advice and any suggestions what the fault may be?

You're right, it is a tricky one, one that would be hard to diagnose if you couldn't observe it yourself. That someone else has observed it doesn't really help if it won't do it while you are present. That appears to be what Honda is saying, and I would be asking for a Honda representative to go for a drive with you in the hope it does it while they are present.
