Fuel sticker way out

I RECENTLY read a letter from a person asking about the fuel consumption in his Honda Accord and you advised him to take it back to the dealer. I wish him luck. My wife bought a new Civic in November and the sticker on the windscreen showed a fuel consumption of 8.3 litres for 100km, but we average between 10.36 and 11.5 litres for 100km. The dealer told us that it is the poor quality petrol and to use premium, but that made no difference. We have been told that the sticker figure is to be used only for comparison purposes, and while I never expected to get the sticker figure in real life, I would have thought that I would have been getting better than 10 litres/100km. If the sticker figure has no bearing on what you will get, what use is it?

7 Jun 2007THE only value is for comparison purposes. Because all cars are tested to the same standard, the figures mean you can compare one model with the previous one to see if it has been improved, or one make to another to see which is the more fuel-efficient. In real life, fuel consumption varies depending on driving style, traffic density, tyre pressures and the number of passengers you carry. Even so, I would expect you to be able to get within 10 per cent of the figure claimed.
