Holden Calais engine replacement

Asked by Ashley Roberts

I have just had the engine in my VT Holden Calais replaced and have had to take it back to the mechanic three times to have oil leaks fixed. The last time I took it back they found that the rocker cover gaskets need replacing, which they say that I have to pay $150 to have them fixed. Each time I took the car back they said that all is fine and nothing should go wrong, but then something else does. Could you advise if I am in the right in saying that I should not have to pay for these to be replaced as I expect that the engine that I got should not have to have anything done to it?

I am assuming the engine was a second-hand one and there was no guarantee on it or the work done by the mechanic. If that is the case you are relying on the goodwill of the mechanic to do the 'right' thing and have little other claim. The best thing to do would be to talk to the mechanic about your expectations and try to reach an agreement on the cost to carry out the subsequent repairs. If you can't reach a satisfactory agreement you could try your consumer affairs people, or take the mechanic to your small claims tribunal. If there was a guarantee on the engine or the work make a claim on that.
