Thirty years ago the automotive industry changed from imperial to metric units for engine output, from horsepower and foot-pounds to kilowatts and newton-metres. But, for some time now, Maserati has been advertising power figures only in the old, numerically higher imperial measure - its petrol V6 is said to have 410 horsepower and not 306 kilowatts. Is this misleading advertising?

20 Oct 2014It's not just Maserati. Renault Sport cars - the Megane 265 among them - take their names from the engine's rated metric horsepower.
