Neck-breaking experience

Asked by Mark Campbell

LIKE Andrew Moyle, I have a clunking 2008 VE Calais V8 and have experienced the same appalling gearbox flare. Lifting the foot off the accelerator at roundabouts and then reapplying as gently as possible results in neck-breaking gear searching. If you lift your foot then plant it again, at 30km/h you really do need your seat belt for the neck-snapping experience. The fault was confirmed by the service manager at the 3000km service, but blamed on my aftermarket exhaust. A reasonable excuse maybe, except I phoned the salesman the day after I picked up the car to complain about the gearbox and the exhaust was fitted a week later. I also have a friend with the same model car who has been getting the gearbox adjusted for 18 months. Another dealer said there had been many complaints about the six-speed automatic gearbox. They told me to bring it in and they would load a new gear ratio program. They didn't think it would change anything, but surprisingly it was much better . . . even if it wasn't completely fixed.

IT LOOKS like you've been given a factory fix, and it has worked. We have had sufficient complaints about the six-speed auto box to make us think something fishy is happening. Anyone with a similar problem should contact their dealer. If that doesn't get the required response, contact Holden direct.
