2022 MG One revealed: Mazda CX-5, Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage rival debuts new platform for Chinese challenger brand

MG has revealed an all-new coupe-style mid-size SUV, the MG One.

The new SUV was leaked two weeks ago but has now been shown in production form. The mid-sizer is roughly the same size as the popular HS available in Australia, but wears the brand’s latest design language.

It will slot into MG’s busy domestic range alongside the slightly larger Pilot – which is tipped to be a replacement for the HS – as well as the MG5 sedan, MG6 sedan, and ZS small SUV.

Importantly, the MG One debuts a new platform for the brand, dubbed SIGMA, which stands for SAIC Intelligent Global Modular Architecture, and is the first step in MG’s SAIC parent moving away from its hodge-podge of underpinnings, which it currently relies on for its diverse range which globally ranges from the MG3 hatch to the LDV T60 ute.

The ZS small SUV and MG3 hatch sit on independent platforms, while the HS mid-sizer shares its underpinnings with the China-only MG6 mid-size sedan. The new Sigma platform is claimed to support vehicles in four size categories, although it is unclear how small or large it can scale to as of yet.

The new platform is said to provide a lower centre of gravity and higher torsional rigidity than existing MG products, and is ready to support a family of new-generation engines and electrification technologies.

The MG One will be available in a bright set of colours to appeal to a youthful audience.

Its new electrical architecture has been designed to support autonomous driving beyond SAE Level 3, thanks to radar and camera-based support systems, and will also have V2X capability through 5G support.

The previous leak also confirmed several trim levels for the One, which includes 17- to 19-inch wheel sizes, several styling variations on the brand’s latest design theme (which is yet to be seen outside of China), and a new 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder engine with 133kW of power.

No other specs have been revealed yet, but it is likely to be front-wheel drive via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission as used elsewhere in the brand's range.

MG is pitched as SAIC’s youth-focused brand in China, to that end the One is available in a broad array of colours and two-tone trim options. The One’s interior has not yet been revealed, although Chinese media is reporting it will debut a new ‘smart cockpit’ design for the brand.

Two weeks ago, when the MG One was leaked, an MG Australia representative told CarsGuide the brand has nothing to announce regarding the coupe-style SUV for Australia but added nothing from the brand’s international catalogue is off the table.

MG Australia has repeatedly mentioned that it will focus on the Hybrid and EV space going forward.
