Volkswagen’s commercial division has thrown the covers off of its ‘T7’ Multivan people mover, which shares design queues with the ID.Buzz electric van and the just-launched Mk8 Golf.
The new-generation Multivan is powered by a range of engines, including the not-yet-for-Australia 1.5-litre ‘Evo’ family. This includes a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 100kW, a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 150kW, and a 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbo engine mated to an 85kW electric motor for a combined output of 160kW. A diesel four-cylinder turbo producing 110kW, the most likely engine for Australia, is set to join the global line-up sometime in 2022.
Outside, the Multivan gains styling which takes hints from both its Kombi ancestor and upcoming all-electric ID.Buzz van sibling, while adopting the same face and features as the eighth-generation Golf in its grille-less face and integrated LED light clusters.
Inside, the Multivan scores the same digital overhaul as the new Golf, with the same 10.25-inch digital dashboard and 10.0-inch multimedia touchscreen featuring the latest VW software suite.
Expect the same functionality as the Golf 8, with wireless phone connectivity, built-in sat-nav available on either screen and shift-by-wire transmission controls. Other cabin features include the new steering wheel common across all updated VWs, ambient interior lighting and reworked cloth seat trims.
The Multivan’s second row is comprised of two ‘captains chairs’, which can be flipped a full 180-degrees to face rear passengers, as well as a floating console with cupholders, power outlets, storage, and a multifunction foldout table. Meanwhile, the passenger seats can be completely removed to maximise storage. A long-wheelbase version will even be able to store up to 4053-litres. VW is claiming a class leading internal load height.
The Multivan will bring with it the same IQ Drive safety suite as is featured across Volkswagen’s new and updated range, and VW will introduce vehicle-to-infrastructure connectivity to its commercial range with this model.
CarsGuide contacted VW’s local arm for comment on the new T7 Multivan, with brand representative Kurt McGuiness informing us “it’s currently under investigation for Australia, but naturally we’d love to offer it. T6.1 continues to set sales records this year, so we definitely see an appetite for a new T-model.”
The Multivan could join a busy lineup for Volkswagen’s commercial division in the next 18 months, with big launches planned for the new-generation Caddy and blockbuster Amarok. Stay tuned as we learn more about the T7 in 2022.
