Best EOFY 2020 deals: Hatchbacks

Electric vehicles are all the rage. Apparently. And if you have a hankering to commute silently, to enjoy the cost-saving benefits of plugging in the car, and to revel in finally disregarding petrol stations, the Nissan Leaf may be the way to go.

This is one of the best EV hatchbacks with five doors and all the upmarket features for the family - leather, sat-nav and a top-shelf infotainment system - and has a 315km range before needing a recharge. The charge is now $53,190 drive-away. This is a healthy saving of $3042 over the normal price.
 

Not to be outdone, Suzuki has chopped big chunks off its Swift pricing with savings of up to $3375 and reductions of around 15 per cent off the price you would have paid last month.

The Swift GL Navigator - which as the name implies gets sat-nav - is now $17,990 drive-away for the manual, down $3291 or 15.5 per cent. The automatic variant is discounted by $3333 to $18,990.

Probably the better buy because of its added safety gear is the Swift GL Navigator with Safety pack that this month is $19,990 drive-away for the automatic, a saving of $3375. There’s even solid savings for the sports model with the Swift GLX Turbo, with automatic transmission and a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, now out the door at $23,490 including on-road costs, saving $3318.

Mazda has its Mazda2 small hatch on the discount block this month, wiping up to more than $2700 off the prices of a car that is already great discount buying. The value-for-money G15 Pure is now $21,990 for the manual version, down $2525 or 10.3 per cent on its regular price.

The Evolve automatic gets a bit more gear - sat-nav and head-up display included - and is now $25,490, a cut of $2668 or 9.5 per cent. If you want a bit more luxury in your next small car, the Mazda2 GT has been slashed by $2735 to $26,990 for the automatic model with leather, active cruise control and sat-nav.

Kia’s popular small hatch, the Cerato, is also on the block in S form, now $21,490 for the manual, a cut of $3864 or 15.2 per cent. Prices include on-road costs. The automatic version is $23,490, down a decent $4782.

The Cerato Sport+ adds more gear, including safety equipment and leather upholstery, and for the automatic is now $29,240 which represents a huge $4292 saving. The feature-rich GT, with its 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine, welcomes June with a $33,990 drive-away price, a saving of $3868. The GT adds goodies including LED headlights, wireless phone charging and premium sound.

Volkswagen is awaiting the Mk8 Golf and while they’re waiting, they’re discounting. Its range is dominated by the Golf hatch and opens this month with a $4944 slice off the normal $29,934 price for the 110 TSI Trendline manual, bringing it down to $24,990 drive-away.

You’d probably want an auto, though, so there’s the same version with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox for $26,990 drive-away, a saving of $5028 or 15.7 per cent.

Want more features? The Comfortline edition has more gear including sat-nav and climate air-con and the same 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine and seven-speed auto for $30,490, saving 17.6 per cent or $3612. Even more features? The Highline adds a sunroof, leather seats, LED headlights and self-parking for $35,490 drive-away, cutting 17 per cent or $3974 off the normal price.

What about performance? If you’ve always wanted a Golf GTI, now is the time. Volkswagen has it on the lot for $53,143, slashing $4153 (or 7.8%) off the recommended sticker price. Then there’s the even more powerful all-wheel-drive Golf R now at $55,990 (saving $6608 or 10.6%).

Move up in the world with a three-pointed star on the grille for an outlay of as little as $52,900 drive-away. The Mercedes-Benz A180 hatch comes with automatic transmission and a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine and heaps of safety equipment.

It even has Mercedes’ latest five-year warranty. Mercedes is also throwing in at no cost two packages - the Seat Comfort Package (electric seats, heating for the front seats, and a reverse parking mode for the passenger mirror) that is normally $1290; and the Vision Package (high-beam assist, LED headlights, panoramic sunroof and 360-degree camera) that has an option price of $2490. The saving is $3780.

The Abarth 595, which is based heavily on the Fiat 500, comes as a base version that starts at $28,450 drive-away for the manual. That saves $3151 or 10 per cent.

There is a convertible version as well that is now at $31,450, a cut of $3277 or 9.4 per cent. There is the more equipment-heavy Competizione version that has extra gear including leather upholstery - but the same drive train - that is priced in hatch and convertible guises at $33,450 and $37,450 respectively.

The savings are $3361 for the hatch and $3529 for the convertible, or about nine per cent. The Abarth has a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine.

If you want Australia’s best-selling micro car, Kia has its very popular Picanto on the market starting at $16,190 for the S manual, saving $1762 and including on-road costs.

The auto is now down to $17,190, saving $2429. There’s the GT-Line with leather at $18,690 for the auto (saving $2496) and the manual-only turbocharged GT warm hatch at $19,190, down from its normal $21,911.

Mini is enticing buyers to its Hatch range with the Cooper three-door manual with 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine now $35,526 drive-away including five years or 80,000km of free scheduled servicing and five years of roadside assistance. The five-door automatic is now $39,456 including the service and roadside deal.
