Ford’s Ranger has surged ahead of the HiLux in 4x4 sales, but Toyota’s ute is still the outright favourite model in Australia.
Ford’s Ranger ute has stolen the lead in the 4x4 pick-up segment from the evergreen Toyota HiLux, edging ahead in year-to-date sales by just 75 units.
With 2850 new registrations in July, compared with the Toyota HiLux 4x4’s 2517 tally, the Australian-developed Ranger 4x4 has now found a total of 22,108 new homes in 2019.
However, when factoring in 4x2 sales, Toyota’s HiLux nameplate jumps to 29,491 total units to top Australia’s best-selling model chart, ahead of the Ranger’s 24,664 4x4 and 4x2 combined sales and second place.
After seven months of trading, Mitsubishi’s Triton is currently the third-most popular pick-up, registering 12,352 4x4 and 1929 4x2 sales for a total of 14,281, while the Holden Colorado and Isuzu D-Max round out the top five with 11,013 (9838 4x4 and 1175 4x2) and 9747 (6741 4x4 and 3006 4x2) units respectively.
The top five utes in the country are selling more or less at the same pace they were last year, but the sixth-placed Nissan Navara (8136 combined 4x4 and 4x2) has decreased 14 per cent this year from the 9494 figure at this points last year.
Meanwhile, Mazda has sold 7519 units of its BT-50 workhorse, 4885 Volkswagen Amaroks have been sold and 1201 Mercedes-Benz X-Class utes have found new homes in 2019.
Interestingly, the Chinese LDV T60 has amassed 1926 sales after seven months of trading, placing it in ninth place ahead of the Mercedes premium ute.
The Great Wall Steed and SsangYong Musso/Musso XLV round out the 12-strong pick-up field with 788 and 60 units respectively.
