Mazda recalls 2.2 million cars over rust risk

Mazda has issued a global recall of more than 2.2 million cars from across its range to rectify a potential corrosion issue that affects some of its best-selling models.

The recall involves three of Mazda’s most popular models in Australia, including the best-selling Mazda3, the new Mazda CX-3 and the brand’s Mazda6 sedan, all built between 2007 and 2015. International reports also suggest a model not sold in Australia, the Mazda5, is also affected. 

The recall is understood to affect 400,000 vehicles sold in Japan, and a further 1.8 million cars sold in other countries. While Mazda’s local office is still finalising the number of vehicles affected here, Australia is one of the brand’s biggest international markets.

International reports suggest the problem does not impact on the way affected vehicles drive.

At issue is a paint that’s been incorrectly applied to the boot area, which can cause corrosion if not rectified. International reports are suggesting water can enter the gas strut that holds the boot lid open, which can cause it to close unexpectedly. 

There have been no local cases of accidents or injuries, and international reports suggest the problem does not impact on the way affected vehicles drive.

Mazda Australia told CarsGuide.com.au it was working to determine the impact in Australia.

“At this stage, specific details for the Australian market have not been confirmed, but when these details are made available they will be communicated to the relevant authorities, our customers and our dealer network,” said Mazda PR boss Karla Leach.
