Mercedes-Benz EQV 2020 electric van revealed

Mercedes’ electric vehicle rollout has taken its next step, with the all-new EQV breaking cover overnight.

The German brand has taken the wraps off a battery-powered passenger van, which joins the previously unveiled EQC SUV. Boasting seating for up to eight people and a range of 405km it’s arguably the most practical EV to date.

Like the EQC, Mercedes has taken advantage of its existing V-Class range to make an easier transition between internal combustion and electric vehicles. As such the EQV will be built in the same Spanish plant as the V-Class and Viano.

However, like its SUV sibling, the EQV will get a unique look with a redesigned front end being the most notable. It features the brand’s new black panel EQ grille that it hopes will become a signature of all its electric models.

Motivation for the EQV comes from an electric motor mounted above the front axle with the lithium-ion batteries laid out underneath the floor of the cabin. That means interior space isn’t compromised so the EQV remains as practical as the rest of the V-Class range.

Performance from the electric motor is rated at 150kW of power and 362Nm of torque, with a top speed of 160km/h.

Mercedes will offer a range of seating options, with the choice of seven or eight seats depending on customer preference. Buyers will also be able to choose from two different wheelbases - 3200mm as standard and 3430mm for the stretched variant.

A unique touch for the EQV are rose gold highlights throughout the cabin, which is another signature element of Mercedes’ battery-powered offerings. Also included is the latest version of MBUX, the brand’s voice controlled multimedia system.

While people movers (or MPVs) are a niche market in Australia, they remain a popular choice in Europe for both private and fleet buyers so the addition of the EQV is an important step for Mercedes.

It offers comfortable handling, dynamic electro-aesthetics, intuitive operation and generous space – and all locally emissions-free. This means that it offers all of the typical qualities of the brand and segment that our customers expect, whether as a family car or a shuttle vehicle with a lounge-like character.”

The EQV will make its public debut at September’s Frankfurt motor show before going on sale in Europe in 2020. No details on Australian availability, timing or pricing have been announced yet.
