Mondeo Ford?s new star
And it will run alongside the Falcon.
The great looking new Mondeo was the star of a Ford stand at the Melbourne International Motor Show today that also included a 40th anniversary Falcon GT, a Fiesta XR4 hot hatch and the Focus Coupe-Cabriolet. All will arrive in showrooms during 2007.
The Mondeo is the car with the most potential, as it has the capacity to scoop up the customers who have walked away from Falcon and Territory in the fallout from the petrol price crisis.
It has been on the radar at Ford Australia for more than 18 months and has been given the go-ahead following the debut of an all-new model in Europe.
It will also bring turbodiesel power to a Ford passenger car in Australia for the first time.
"The new Ford Mondeo is a smart, eye catching car that offers a huge range of sensational features and thoughtful attributes," the president of Ford Australia, Tom Gorman, says.
"When the Mondeo arrives in Australia it will be offered in two body styles, with three trim levels, three engines and wo transmissions." One of those engines is a 2-litre turbodiesel.
Confirmation of the Mondeo, although prices and on-sale date are still secret, comes hot on the heels of GM Holden's preview of its mid-sized Epica. The contrast in their approach could not be more extreme, as Ford is going to Europe for its new hero as the red team abandons the costly Vectra in favour of the Daewoo-made Epica.
