Next-gen Ford Transit Custom van arrival approaching as Blue Oval confirms some local specifications for Toyota HiAce rival

A new-generation version of one of the mainstays of the commercial van world, the Ford Transit Custom, is due to land in Australia soon, and some details have been confirmed in government documentation.

Road Vehicle Descriptor (RVD) documents approved by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts reveal some of the specifications of the 2024 Ford Transit Custom, which was expected to initially land as early as late this year.

Ford Australia has also reconfirmed the all-electric E-Transit Custom will be available in Australia too, joining the larger E-Transit.

Full specifications haven't been confirmed locally, with only two different versions of the commercial van showing up on the approvals listing for now - the short-wheelbase and long-wheelbase versions, though measurements of each are shown.

The variant listings, 320S Van Low Roof and 320L Van Low Roof, denote both have the same maximum GVM (gross vehicle mass) in the ‘320' grade, one is the short- (S) and one is the long-wheelbase (L), while both are the low-roof versions, confirming earlier suspicions that Australia won't receive the high-roof variant.

Interestingly, the model details listed would suggest that rather than a mix of 3400kg and 3100kg GVM versions, just a 3225kg GVM version is to be available - unless more are added later or the listing is an incomplete list of variants set to launch.

It's expected that petrol versions will all use the same engine - similar to the current generation's 2.0-litre turbo-diesel unit with 125kW and 390Nm.
