Is China’s GWM gearing up to take on the Toyota LandCruiser? It certainly seems that way if spy pictures of a large SUV in camouflage, seemingly based on a large GWM ute, are anything to go by.
In images published by Car News China, a large SUV being called the Haval P04 for now appears very much to be a sibling vehicle to the yet-to-be introduced to Australia GWM Ute King Kong Cannon ute.
The King Kong is larger than the likes of the Toyota HiLux, but smaller than a Ram 1500, which means an SUV based on it could be aimed squarely at the king of the castle in that segment, the Toyota LandCruiser.

Car News China reports the P04 is about 5.2 metres long, 2.0m wide, and about 1.8m tall. Its ute basis is available in China with either petrol or diesel in a 2.0-litre turbo engine, though it’s unclear if this will transfer to the SUV, or even to Australia.
Local arm GWM Australia has previously told CarsGuide the King Kong Cannon could make it Down Under, but given that’s not happened yet, it’s unclear if the P04 will either.
“It is something that we are considering. The final decision on [the King Kong] has not yet been made. We continue to work with the head office colleagues on the business case for that,” GWM Australia head of marketing Steve Maciver told CarsGuide in 2022.
CarsGuide has contacted GWM Australia for an update on that position, and to discern the brand’s position on a potential large SUV sibling to the ute.
