The Volkswagen ID.Life won’t reach production, but a high-riding ID.2 will.
The Volkswagen Golf name will live on, not set to be replaced by the ID.2 or ID.3, but part of its current line-up will have a spiritual successor that moves to the former ID mentioned.
The Volkswagen Golf R might not live on if overseas reports are accurate, with the upcoming ID.2 electric car set to muscle in on its territory.
Reports from Autocar in the UK have outlined the direction of Volkswagen’s electric car future, but the latest says the ID.2 will spawn a T-Cross-sized, all-wheel drive performance model that will effectively replace the Volkswagen Golf R.

Reportedly called the ID.2X, the high-riding crossover hatch will form the entry to the VW electric range, taking the mantle of the T-Cross and Polo.
But with all-wheel drive on the table, Autocar says a variant of the ID.2X with more than 225kW is tipped to rival driver-focused EV hatches such as the Abarth 500e and the Alpine R5.
Volkswagen will keep the R badge, as with the GTI nameplate, into the future, with VW CEO Thomas Schäfer telling the publication that it would be a waste to not use such a highly recognisable name.
“With a strong brand, you need to spend less [on marketing, and have better awareness] getting it out there.”
Volkswagen will take the R performance sub-brand all-electric by 2030, with several models already in the works.
