Will current Australian Tesla order holders of the Model 3 and Model Y get the latest price cut too?

How much will the Tesla Model 3 cost now?

This past week we’ve seen chaotic scenes of Tesla customers in China storming the electric vehicle brand’s showrooms in protest that price reductions weren’t being passed on to buyers who had already placed orders for cars.

So will Tesla honour Australian order holders with the price reduction that’s recently been applied to its cars locally?

On Friday, January 6 this year Tesla introduced price cuts to its vehicles in Asian markets including Japan, South Korea and China. The move angered some Chinese consumers who had already placed orders but were told they would have to pay the pre-price-cut amount.

Australia too was part of the sweeping price cuts, which, according to a Reuters report, were made “as part of an effort to help stoke demand for output” from Tesla’s Shanghai factory.

The Australian market Tesla Model Y and Model 3 are both made in China. The price cuts mean Australians will now pay $1600 less to buy the entry grade Tesla Model 3 Standard Range RWD. For NSW residents that’s $63,900. While the most affordable Model Y is now $3400 cheaper with a list price for NSW residents of $68,900.

The decision on whether Tesla will discount the price of Australian order holders’ cars could come down to when the vehicle was ordered. If you ordered a Tesla Model 3 Standard Range RWD in March of 2022 the list price was $59,900. That was before Tesla hiked prices up.

What if you ordered after the price hike? CarsGuide reached out to Tesla asking if the company would offer the discounted price to current order holders who had put down their money after the prices went up, but the American EV brand has yet to respond.

The answer, however, appears to be that Tesla will actually offer the new price to current order holders. This is based on what Australian Tesla owners themselves are reporting on Facebook groups and forums.

One Tesla Owners Australia Facebook member said he had received his final invoice and had been given the lower price.

Despite the recent price reduction there has been an increase to order and delivery fees. The order fee has increased from $350 to $400 and the delivery fee is $25 more at $1400.
