You won't believe what the new LC300 could've looked like! 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Series was a 'HEX-Y' beast in another life

Do you like what the new LandCruiser 300 Series is about but wish it looked very, very different? Well, Toyota nearly gave the LC300 a much wilder exterior design.

Overnight, the Japanese brand released design sketches of the LandCruiser 300 Series, including these early ones that almost look completely unlike the series-production model.

Indeed, at one stage, Toyota planned for the LC300 to go all in on its hexagonal design language with an appropriated shaped – and oversized – grille and tailgate finished in gloss black and punctuated by four-point LED headlights and tail-lights respectively.

Then there’s the X-shaped alloy wheels that are housed underneath the seriously chunky wheelarches as well as the square roof mounts, full-width third brake light and underbody-mounted full-size spare.

In the end, though, the bold styling was left on the cutting room floor, but the design sketches in question do give us an insight into what the Japanese brand was thinking at the time. For example, if you look closely at the image below, you’ll notice the ‘oh baby, you’re so HEX-Y’ tagline.

But what exactly did HEX-Y mean? Well, to the right, it’s noted that “HEX [is] for GEN-Y”, meaning that Generation Y (those born in the 1980s and 1990s) was the hexagon-heavy design language’s prime target, so HEXY-Y was a contraction of sorts.

Needless to say, the LC300’s exterior design ended up being much more evolutionary when compared to the preceding LandCruiser 200 Series. You can read about the former in the above story links, with it set to enter Australian showrooms in the fourth quarter of this year.
