We turn the spotlight on the 2014 Toyota HiLux SR5 4WD and ask the crucial questions, including the biggest -- would you buy one?
What is it?
This is Toyota's super popular dual cab diesel fourbie ute, the HiLux SR5 – top of the range with a bunch of new kit to keep the competition honest.
How much?
The drive car goes for $55 grand which is a lot of cabbage for a workhorse made in Thailand using cheap labour and an alleged free trade agreement.
What are competitors?
Too many to list but mainly Holden Colorado, Mitsubishi Triton, Nissan Navara, Ford Ranger, Volkswagen Amarok.
What's under the bonnet?
This is a slightly revised version of the 3.0-litre turbo diesel four cylinder that's been around for yonks. It's good for 126kW/343Nm and runs OK – can be noisy especially on start up.
How does it go?
Goes OK – about on par with the competition – no real great shakes but adequate and…. Honest. Good once up and running at the required speed. Acceleration is good for a big one tonner with heaps of kit.
Is it economical?
OK. With the new five speed auto, HiLux diesel is now down around the 8.7-litres/100km mark but we saw better than that on continuous freeway driving. Load it up and it's only marginally more thirsty.
Is it green?
Not really. The four speed auto scored only 2.5 stars so the five speeder should better that. One day they'll find a six speed auto under a cabbage and it will possibly go four star green.
Is it safe?
Yep, the 2014 upgraded HiLux is selectively five star NCAP depending on the model. The drive car gets five thanks in part to stability control, a three point middle rear seat belt and multiple air bags.
Is it comfortable?
Not too bad actually thanks to the roomy cab and extra kit that came with the upgrade.Gets reverse camera, SUNA satnav with Live Traffic reports, freshened interior, multi function wheel, power driver's seat.
What's it like to drive?
It's a ute. Take it easy, cruise around and you'll be alright.
Is it value for money?
At nearly 55 grand no but prices start for the dual cab fourbie diesel at $42,490, still a fair old snip. Still most buyers can write it off their tax...
Would we buy one?
Yes, has unbelievable resale, still reliable even though it's not Japan-made these days. Looks good, gets reverse camera, satnav and five star crash rating. Capped price servicing.
