Ford Mondeo Zetec 2007 Review
It's been seven years since Ford had a Mondeo in its line up; the last one was a flop, but this latest - and innovative - version comes with impeccable credentials. There are four variants, three engines and two body shapes to pick from but the auto Zetec sedan, tested here, is expected to be the volume seller.
The Mondeo has a tough fight in its market, but shapes up well against the Mazda6, Toyota Camry, Honda Accord Euro and Subaru Liberty.
Its strengths are excellent driving dynamics, edgy style, willing engine, refined comfort and value for money thanks to a generous list of features and safety equipment including seven airbags. On the road the Ford newcomer feels balanced, surefooted and tight, with excellent steering feel - but a bit more mid-range torque would lift its performance from great to exceptional. The cabin is spacious - it feels almost as roomy as a Falcon - and the boot is cavernous, although shortish drivers may find it a stretch to close the high-rise lid.
It's not all good news though. The Mondeo's Euro lustre is dulled by its ergonomics: you sit low in the car and the heavy front and rear pillars restrict vision (thankfully it comes with rear parking sensors), there's some annoying dashboard reflections on the windscreen and some of the switchgear is fiddly.
